Agroforestry: chocolate in harmony
with the forest

Chocolate is a moment of pleasure rooted in living landscapes, at the heart of forests. Behind every bar lies a relationship with nature, shaped by what grows and breathes.

At CAOYA, we believe that indulgence can also be a conscious act that protects nature. Agroforestry is how we prove it.

The vital link between
climate, biodiversity and agriculture

We are not separate from nature, we are intimately connected to it. Cocoa is proof of this: its cultivation relies on a fragile balance between climate, biodiversity and farming practices, three forces that cannot be separated.

Cocoa depends on a fragile climatic balance, stabilised by forests that regulate humidity and local temperatures.

Biodiversity

Birds, insects and earthworms support cocoa farms by enabling pollination, healthy soils and the natural balance of crops.

Farming practices shape soil vitality and crop resilience, directly influencing the quality and stability of our cocoa harvests.

These three pillars form a virtuous circle that we strive to respect. The tree nourishes the soil, the soil nourishes the cocoa, and the cocoa nourishes you.

Rethinking conventional cocoa farming

For decades, cocoa farming has been designed to produce more, faster. This model comes at a cost that forests, soils and biodiversity bear on our behalf.

Simplified ecosystems through monoculture

Monoculture relies on a uniform model where a single crop is grown across large areas. This reduces natural habitats, weakens local biodiversity and puts increased pressure on our resources.

Depleted soils and fragile crops

The lack of plant diversity and protective vegetation gradually exhausts the fertility of the soils that give birth to the cocoa you love so much. As Nicole Masters says: “Soil is the most important and essential ecosystem, linked to every function on the planet.”

Increased deforestation

When a plot is dedicated to a single crop, more land is needed to maintain production. This leads to clearing entire forests and weakens the ecosystems that shelter the animals living within them.

What is agroforestry?

Agroforestry combines cocoa trees with other trees and crops, such as shade trees, fruit trees and food plants.

This model reproduces the structure of a forest, with a canopy, layered vegetation and rich life in the soil, giving cocoa a more balanced and resilient environment.

The soil passes its strength to the cocoa tree, then to the bean, and finally to you.

Organic, agroforestry and regenerative

Organic farming (the protection) is our foundation.

Agroforestry (the harmony) takes us further than simply “no pesticides”. By planting trees at the heart of cocoa farms, we recreate a complete ecosystem where each species nourishes the next, all the way to your bar.

Regenerative agriculture (the ambition) is our horizon. It is the direction we have set for the future: to work with our producers towards practices that enrich the soil, your health and that of our planet.

Our cocoa at the service of the forest

When grown through agroforestry, our cocoa helps restore damaged landscapes on farmland.

Tree roots stir the soil and allow life to flourish. Healthy soil produces richer cocoa. The trees shield cocoa plants from wind and harsh sunlight.

For the families who grow our cocoa, it also means a cooler, healthier working environment, with fruits, wood and medicinal plants within reach. Caring for the forest means caring for them too.

Where CAOYA stands

We believe chocolate can offer far more than a simple pleasure. This choice begins long before the bar, in the forests, with the men and women who grow our cocoa.

That’s why we work with agroforestry networks and their smallholder producers, whose practices are certified organic. On these lands, cocoa grows alongside other crops such as citrus fruits, sapote and avocado, recreating living ecosystems and offering farmers more stable sources of income.

And because our commitment doesn’t stop here, we donate 10% of every bar sold to NGOs that protect biodiversity. A simple gesture that connects each of your tastings to a positive action for the planet.

Chocolate that cares for the forest and for you

Like a forest where every species plays its role, each of us has a part to play. Ours is to offer you a chocolate that delights as much as it protects. Yours begins with more conscious choices, like savouring an ethical chocolate grown through agroforestry.
