The importance of biodiversity for chocolate

Biodiversity is all around us: in the soils that nourish plants, in the bees that pollinate crops, in the birds that disperse seeds and in the insects, like ladybirds, that protect harvests. This is where the importance of biodiversity lies, at the heart of what we eat, including cacao.

Without biodiversity, crops cannot thrive. It is the foundation of sustainable chocolate.

What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity refers to the variety of all life forms on Earth: plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms. Each plays a role in the balance of the ecosystems we are part of.

In nature, everything is connected: soils nourish plants, plants nourish animals, and this balance allows forests, rivers and crops to flourish. When biodiversity disappears, this entire chain of life becomes fragile, our food included.

Our chocolate is rooted in this reality. From the choice of terroirs to the selection of cacao beans, every decision aims to preserve this living balance that we celebrate in each bar.

What threatens biodiversity

In 25 years, farmland bird populations in France have fallen by 32.5% (LPO, 2026 report). Even familiar species from our gardens, like sparrows and swallows, are now in decline. Intensive agriculture, habitat loss and climate change are the main causes.

Birds are witnesses to the health of our ecosystems. They are part of our everyday lives: the song of a blackbird in spring, a swallow sweeping across the sky. A world without birds would be hard to imagine.

That is why we chose to celebrate them. A bird adorns each of our chocolate bars as a reminder of what we are committed to preserving.

Climate change worsens what agriculture has already set in motion. As temperatures shift, many species must migrate to areas where they cannot always adapt.

And as biodiversity weakens, ecosystems absorb less carbon, which accelerates warming further. A cycle that is difficult to break.

Slowing this vicious cycle also depends on our choices: supporting agriculture that respects ecosystems, adopting a more conscious diet and choosing ethical chocolate that cares for nature.

Conventional agriculture is today the greatest threat to biodiversity. In pursuit of higher yields, entire forests are destroyed and soils are exhausted through monocultures and pesticides, depriving birds of their food: the Skylark has lost more than 550,000 breeding pairs in 25 years.

In Côte d’Ivoire, more than 90% of forests have disappeared since 1950, primarily due to cacao farming (Nature Food, 2023). When a habitat disappears, the species that depend on it vanish with it.

This is precisely because we understand the importance of biodiversity that we chose to source our cacao from agroforestry supply chains, where its cultivation supports ecosystems.

The importance of biodiversity for our cacao and you

The importance of biodiversity starts in the soil

A soil can only be healthy if it is rich and diverse. Micro-organisms provide the earth and plants with the nutrients needed to grow cacao.

Agroforestry is our first step: by growing cacao alongside other trees and plants, we let nature reclaim its place.

Our food and health depend on it

The importance of biodiversity is also measured in what we eat.

Pollinators ensure the reproduction of 75% of the world’s food crops (IPBES, 2016). What ends up on our plates is directly linked to the health of the ecosystems that support biodiversity.

By choosing agroforestry, cacao trees grow alongside other trees. This diversity naturally nourishes the soils, without chemical fertilisers, allowing us to offer you products that are good for your health.

Birds, indicators of biodiversity's health

Birds regulate harmful insects, disperse seeds and reveal, through their mere presence, that nature is in balance. Where they sing, life thrives.

At CAOYA, the importance of biodiversity can be read in the terroirs we choose, where birds still live. Their presence on each of our bars is more than a symbol: it is the promise that on these lands, life is celebrated.

Biodiversity, where our chocolate is born

Understanding the importance of biodiversity means realising that our food and the pleasure of our palate depend on a fragile balance. At CAOYA, protecting biodiversity and offering you an exceptional chocolate are one single mission that you make possible.
